As industry faces lack of skilled professionals for hire, ageing workforces, rises in absenteeism frequently caused by mental health disorders, and growing evidence of the impact of work on chronic illnesses, there is a strong push towards the inclusive design of human-centred shop floor technology that reconciles the interests of production, worker well-being, and social sustainability. Fraunhofer AICOS has intervened in this socio-technical space through the participatory design of cyber-physical systems to train, assist, and protect individuals and make the tacit knowledge of industrial workers visible.
